Anthraquinones from in vitro root culture of Morinda royoc L. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity.

RESUMEN (ABSTRACT)
"Plants are a source of natural diversity in the multitude of compounds that they synthesize. Anthraquinones (AQs) are compounds with a wide range of biological activities. They are present in Morinda royoc L. roots. Plant cell cultures are an alternative source for the production of high-value secondary metabolites. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether it is possible to obtain or improve AQs production in vitro root cultures of M. royoc L. and to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of dichloromethane extracts and AQs from Morinda royoc L. In that order we assess the effect of light, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), culture duration, subculture number, sucrose and elicitors on M. royoc L. root cultures. The experiments performed in this study allowed an increase of intracellular AQs content up to a maximum of 6.07 mg.g-1 of fresh mass, after 30 days of culture in a medium with 5.7 µM of IAA and 25 mg.L-1 of jasmonic acid. In addition, isolation of eight AQs from M. royoc L. roots is described. The structures of purified compounds were determined from 1H-NMR data. The crude extracts were active against evaluated Candida species. Morindone was found to be the best active compound. The lowest minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) (1.95 µg.mL-1) were obtained as to the crude extracts as morindone. The dichloromethane extracts showed strong inhibitory activity against S. aureus, E. faecales and E. coli. The lowest MIC values obtained were 31.25 and 15 µg.mL-1 for crude extracts and morindone respectively."
