Food and Feed Safety Assessment of Stacked Event Products Derived through Conventional Breeding: The Evaluation of Genomic Stability and Potential Trait Interactions

RESUMEN (ABSTRACT)
"Agricultural biotechnology products with two or more approved transgenic events combined through conventional breeding (stacked event products) provide growers with combinations of several desired traits in a single seed variety. Although the majority of stacked events are fundamentally no different from other products of conventional breeding, stacked event products are sometimes viewed differently with respect to risk and safety assessment. Questions about the safety of stacked event products fall into two general areas. First, there is a question as to whether multiple transgenes bred into a plant can lead to mutation or genomic instability. Based on a review of the literature on genomic plasticity and an understanding that the inserted DNA in transgenic events is fully integrated into the genome, we conclude that efforts aimed at studying transgene stability in a stacked event product relative to its component events will not make significant contributions to its safety assessment. The second question is whether potential interactions between the introduced traits of the approved events could impact safety. Using prior scientific knowledge about the individual events as a basis, the potential for traits to interact can be evaluated. This information can be used to identify the possibility of a safety hazard in the stacked event product and to determine if additional targeted analysis should be performed."
