RESUMEN (ABSTRACT)
"Most of the phenotypic diversity present in nature is inherited in a quantitative manner. In the last twenty years, it has become routine to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying this diversity. However, few QTL have been dissected to the point of identifying the causal gene(s), therefore, understanding of the molecular basis of quantitative inheritance remains incomplete. New DNA sequencing technologies applied in combination with appropriate germplasm promise an improvement in understanding of the molecular basis of quantitative traits. The species Brassica oleracea is an outstanding model for the dissection of complex phenotypes due to its extraordinary range of morphological variation among freely-intercrossing genotypes and its strong and expanding set of genomic resources. Furthermore, the Brassica genus is remarkable for containing more agricultural and horticultural cultivars than any other genus. B. oleracea is an intricately-complex genome, extensively colinear with Arabidopsis thaliana but with most of its genome duplicated and some triplicated, introducing novel dimensions into its genetics that make it a singularly-attractive model. In order to understand in depth the inheritance of complex traits and the genome structure of B. oleracea, we are developing two panels of nearly isogenic lines (NILs) for two important vegetables in this species; Cabbage and Cauliflower. Its development and analysis will provide new insight and understanding into how genomes evolve, how genomic segments interact in different backgrounds, and the effects of these factors on the inheritance of quantitative traits."
