Field performance and genetic stability of plantain hybrid cultivar ÔFHIA-21Õ (Musa AAAB) obtained by somatic embryogenesis

RESUMEN (ABSTRACT)
"The use of somatic embryogenesis as a plant regeneration system constitutes an alternative for mass propagation of Musa crop. This study was conducted with the objective to evaluate the field performance and genetic stability of plantain hybrid cultivar FHIA-21 (Musa AAAB) regenerated by somatic embryogenesis. A population of 6 252 plants regenerated from somatic embryos were planted next to 2 000 plants obtained by shoot-tip culture and an equal number of plants obtained from suckers. The evaluation criteria included all observed changes with respect to normal plants, according to technical description for the cultivar ÔFHIA-21Õ proposed by FHIA. In total, eighth quantitative variables were evaluated on 150 plants from each population. In addition, an AFLP analysis was performed using six primer combinations based on the use of EcoRI and Tru9I restriction enzymes. The results showed a frequency of plants variants of 0.095 % (two plants of type "Grele" and four with the change in finger position in the bunch) of total plants regenerated from somatic embryos. There were no morphological and agronomical differences between plants regenerated by somatic embryogenesis and shoot-tip culture. No AFLP polymorphism bands were detected among plants from somatic embryos, shoots-tip culture and suckers with the combinations of primers used. The results in this research showed a good agronomical performance and high genetic stability of the plants obtained by somatic embryogenesis of cultivar ÔFHIA-21Õ. Thus, based on field evaluation data, commercial application of somatic embryogenesis can be envisaged in this cultivar.
