"CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF Pterocaulon polystachyum DC. AND Calea serrata Less., TWO ASTERACEAE NATIVE OF SOUTH BRAZIL"

RESUMEN (ABSTRACT)
"The essential oil of two native species from southern Brazil belonging to the family Asteraceae were obtained and analyzed for the first time, and some of their biological activities were assessed. Pterocaulon polystachyum, popularly known as ÒquitocoÓ, is a plant used in folk medicine as digestive, antiseptic, antiparasitic, and antifungal and is characterized for the presence oxygenated coumarins on the aerial parts. Calea serrata, known as Òquebra-tudoÓ, is used in Afro-Brazilian religious rituals and in folk medicine for treating liver disorders and the presence of chromenes has been described for its leaves. P. polysthachyum oil was tested for the amoebicidal activity against Acanthamoeba polyphaga trophozoites, while the oil of C. serrata was assayed for the acaricidal activity against the larvae of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Both essential oils were obtained from the fresh leaves of the plants by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The yields of essential oil were about 0.1% for both species, and the composition of the oils was characterized mainly by sesquiterpenes. P. polysthachyum essential oil showed the predominance of E-sesquilavandulyl acetate (42.3%) followed by E-sesquilavandullol (16.8%) and beta-caryophyllene (13.2%), while C. serrata oil had the chromene precocene II (29.6%), germacrene D (26.4%) and beta-selinene (10.0%) as the major compounds. In the amoebicidal test, P. polysthachyum oil provided complete mortality of trophozoites at 24 and 48h at 10 and 20 mg/mL; while the 2.5 mg/mL concentration resulted in 71.6% and 46.3% and at 5 mg/mL it was 81.1% and 80.7% in the same time, respectively. In the acaricidal assay, the concentrations of the oil of C. serrata at 20.0, 10.0, 5.0 and 2.5 μL/mL killed the totality of the larvae. The LC50, determined by linear regression analysis, was 0.28 μL/mL."
