RESUMEN (ABSTRACT)
"Since 2010, Brazil is the second largest genetically modified (GM) crops producer. The commercial release of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and their derivatives must comply with the rules of the Normative Resolution Nº 5, March 12, 2008. For the indispensable risk analysis of GMO the Brazilian Ministry of Health established a Biosafety Working Group by Ordinance Nº 240, February 12, 2008. The group is formed by Ministry of Health Biosafety Commission members, by representatives of the Ministry of Health at the National Biosafety Commission (CTNBio), representatives of National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA) and ad hoc experts with recognized expertise in GMO analysis. The main goal of this group is to evaluate GM products, for their safety or determine the risks to public health. The methodology used by group follows the criteria laid out in the CTNBio Normative Resolution Nº 5, which provides the standards for commercial release of food or GM deriver health products, in compliance with the provisions contained in Law Nº 11.105, on March 24, 2005. The analyses are related to genetic engineering, nutritional quality, toxicology, biochemistry, physiology and allergenicity. The main products evaluated at the working group were soybeans, corn, cotton, rice and vaccines for animal and human use. There is global consensus on the need for safety assessment of GMOs products for their safety and quality. In this sense, the Brazilian Ministry of Health has followed the precautionary principle, aiming to fulfill the mission related to the safety of genetically modified foods and medicines."
