RESUMEN (ABSTRACT)
"Pineapple is an important crop for many countries in Central-South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region. Most of the pineapple production is based on a few leading cultivars such as Smooth Cayenne and MD2. Pineapple germplasm is maintained in several collections around the world. Some countries including Cuba have smaller but nonetheless important collections since they represent the genetic diversity of the cultivated and non-cultivated pineapple in that particular country. Most of the genotypes in the Cuban pineapple germplasm collection at the Bioplantas Centre have been obtained from farmers or through exchanges with other collections. Lynch et al., 2007 proposed that significant land loss, global warming and erosion of the environmental (thermal) cues essential for plant growth and reproduction will, in the long-term, have both obvious and insidious consequences for agriculture, horticulture and forestry. As such, it will become increasingly important to conserve and safeguard our most precious plant genetic resources through assiduous application and integration of in situ and ex situ conservation practices. For the latter, the role of cryopreservation to offset the risks of environmental instability on a particularly climatically vulnerable category of crops, those that are vegetatively propagated is crucial. However, an important prerequisite is to characterize the germplasm in order to know with more precision what should be conserved. In this work, we first used AFLP markers to assess the genetic diversity of the Cuban pineapple germplasm collection and then developed a cryopreservation strategy for the long term conservation of the collection."
